You can't help but have the time of your life when you are around this runner, biker, swimmer, socializer, Leslie Johnson
! She brings the fun to every run! We adopted Leslie the moment we met her and are honored to "officially" have her as part of our Triple Dare Family!! Here is what Leslie has to say:
"My run journey started very young and all I can remember while growing up was running from one place to the next. I was a very hyper, misunderstood, troubled teen. One day my teacher had it with me, so to punish me, I was to run laps until ‘he’ was tired. I still remember to this day what he said to me when I was finally done. “I didn’t think you had it in you.” That was the best punishment anyone could have given me. From that moment, I joined track and cross-county and went from the principal’s office to gaining focus, having an outlet and most importantly a team of people that were driven and happy and influenced me to be better.
Running is and was the best therapy I could have ever been introduced to. I was blessed to run on the varsity team in the good ol' state of Texas. The best part of my youth was sports and how important they were to the entire community. Racing opened me up to so many opportunities and I became better in all aspects of my life.
Unfortunately, by the end of my Junior year I had pain down my right leg that took me out completely. After many doctor visits and tests, it was confirmed I had fractured my femur and the only diagnosis was to stop running. I was crushed, but that didn’t stop me. I took up bicycling and dance to rehab my leg, but I wouldn’t run again until 14 years later.
I believe the strength and confidence I gained from running fueled me to try other things and not give up or quit. Three years ago, I came to a time in my life where I was longing for a challenge and decided to do my first triathlon. This required learning how to swim and getting over my fear of water in general. Never would I have guessed this would have changed my life in so many ways. The power of community and the constant moments of learning in each discipline resonated with me. However, I did not train for the running portion and would just jog my way through to the end each time, which was not pleasant. I completed 14 triathlons before I decided to take on running again.
Enter Nancy Jones; meeting this woman would be pivotal to my life in so many ways. She helped me diagnose my physical issues and rehab them while working on the physcology of what the injury did to me and how I was hanging on to it for so long. The progress was slow, yet steady and the one thing she kept saying to me was, “You remind me of Forrest Gump, once we get these braces off your legs, you are going to fly.” At the time I didn’t believe her, but I didn’t have to, it happened anyway.
I found this great community of dynamic, fun and full of light people that I would have never known had I not joined Rockin Runners and the Desert Rats. Having this wonderful community and all our fun adventures to look forward to has enhanced my life in all areas.
What a difference a year makes and sticking with Nancy’s program, letting go of past visions of who I was and looking where I wanted to go without fear or doubt catapulted me into a realm I had never experienced before. I had found MY HAPPY!
Running is a journey that allows me to be transparent with myself, to live free, to let go of being right or controlling and to put one foot in front of the other while my heart moves forward and my eyes look up to the sky. Thank you, Heidi, for bringing your beautiful energy into my life, I am so grateful for your friendship on and off the trail! I am so privileged and honored to be a Triple Dare ambassador and look forward to this beautiful voyage of watching more people embrace running and racing!"
